Why act now?

Businesses are facing increasing pressure from politicians, the press, customers, employees and future recruits, investors and society as a whole to think beyond short-term shareholder profits towards a longer-term 'stakeholder' approach for fairer, better and more responsible business. The planet needs it. This should be seen as a business opportunity.

Strong sustainability performance is a sign of a healthy, resilient business.
Legislation in the pipeline
The Better Business Act Campaign seeks to change section 172 of the Companies Act to make it obligatory to act and report on the triple bottom line.

A survey of directors by the Institute of Directors in 2021 found that 62% of directors believe that businesses should not exist solely to make money and generate shareholder profits.
Sources: The Better Business Act 2023, Institute of Directors, IoD Directors’ Briefing, 11 June 2021
Changing public perceptions
Repeated studies have shown that customers are more likely to purchase from purpose-led businesses and are prepared to pay higher prices. Research from Bain & Company found that 70% of consumers were prepared to pay a premium on products from purpose-led brands that demonstrated sustainability and social impact. This premium was worth 10-25% on top of the usual price of the product.
Source: Bain & Company and Verlinvest, Purpose-Led Brands Can Reshape the Consumer-Goods Industry if They Can Scale…, October 2022
Investor pressure
Companies that fulfil their purpose and responsibilities to stakeholders reap rewards over the long-term. Companies that ignore them stumble and fail.

Investors are focussing their strategies around more ‘sustainable’ propositions as they acknowledge this is now seen as a source of competitive advantage, as well as having significant effects on returns.

85% of investors considered ESG factors in their investments in 2020, while 91% of banks monitor ESG performance of investments.
Sources: Larry Fink, BlackRock CEO, 2019, PWC, Why is responsible investment so important for Private Equity Houses?, Gartner research 2021
Employee productivity
If employees feel they are working towards a good cause, it can increase their productivity by up to 30%. A survey of business leaders by Harvard Business School found that 89% agreed that an organisation with a shared purpose will have greater employee satisfaction and 72% believed that a shared purpose gave employees fulfilment in their work.
Sources: LMU Center for Economic Studies 2014, McKinsey Quarterly, Purpose: Shifting from why to how 2020, Harvard Business School, The Business Case for Purpose, 2015
Competitive positioning
Your competitors are doing it. Your customers are demanding it. Winning a public tender in the UK depends on it through the capture and measurement of social value.

Sustainability will play a key role in the coming years and embedding it at the core of corporate strategy will be critical. Already, there is an increase in the number of Fortune 500 companies appointing their first Chief Sustainability Officers (CSO). Giving importance to sustainability is essential to meet investor pressure, consumer demand, regulatory requirements, talent acquisition and ensure increased productivity.
Financial benefits
McKinsey analysis shows that companies that achieve better growth and profitability than their peers while improving sustainability and ESG outgrow their peers and exceed them in shareholder returns.

What is different about our approach?
Integrating sustainability into business - in a way that makes the CFO happy!

Leadership & Governance

Context matters - and sustainability needs board and senior executive commitment as well as budget and resources.

We work with and coach executive directors and the senior leadership to ensure a common understanding and shared sustainability vision, as part of an organisation’s risk, resilience and reputation management and oversight at the board level.

Organisational Development & Culture

With board level and CEO / MD commitment, we can then help with the necessary internal comms to cascade key messages throughout the organisation, to enthuse, align and train staff within sustainability goals as well as tap into bottom-up and lateral communications, both formal and informal from a key stakeholder group – your employees.

Our workshop and training sessions help drive cultural change and align the values of the staff with the business, with a direct impact on staff retention, absence as well as productivity and innovation.

ESG-Sustainability Development

Our flexible 7‘M’ framework, with its multi-step modular approach, will help you build a solid sustainability foundation and core for transformational organisational change that will drive efficiency, effectiveness and profit.

Good housekeeping in terms of energy, water and waste management will result in savings. Employee voice, engagement and benefits will drive productivity, innovation and growth.

Management Systems Implementation

Greater strategic community outreach and collaboration will enhance your reputation, recruitment and resilience, build a healthy local environment and ensure your licence to operate is truly sustainable.

Our approach will create a lasting legacy, a platform for cultural change for continuous, self-managed improvement. It will more than pay for itself with positive impacts on both financial and non-financial KPIs -and thus keep your CFO happy!

What do we do?

Our philosophy is simple — hire a team of diverse, passionate people and foster a culture that empowers you to do your best work.

Make sustainability profitable.
We offer business services that focus on your bottom line. The triple bottom line.

We can help integrate sustainability into your business strategy and daily operations, to drive growth, increase profits and keep you ahead of the fast-moving responsible business late curve.  Don’t get caught out – act now, before it’s too late!

How do we help you?

Our philosophy is simple — we meet you where you are, and take it from there, to create a solid foundation for your continuous improvement journey. We don't give you fish - we teach you how to fish so that you won't need us as sustainability becomes ingrained into your business.

Whether you're new to ESG and sustainability practices or you are looking to get ahead of the competition, our 7 'M' Framework will be the basis of our engagement, with a menu of options.

1. Motivation

Motives set intentions - make a commitment!

Don't be a 'denier' and bury your head in the sand or procrastinate. Recognise the tide of history and embrace the sustainability opportunity, whether it be for moral, idealogical, business reasons.

Act now and signal your commitment to better business!

We can you align and motivate your staff too with high impact sessions.
Good Business Charter
We can help you get accredited to the Good Business Charter - it's low cost, minimal management time and commitment based. Low hanging fruit as they say - a clear signal to internally and externally to all stakeholders.
Better Business Act Campaign
A cross-party campaign, launched in 2021 and now with over 2,000 responsible businesses seeking a level sustainability playing field.

2. Mapping

Gap analysis

Before we now where we are going, best to now where we are starting from! We use two initial tools to get a finger on the pulse of your business, with a scoring and RAG report.

For larger businesses we use our Advanced Sustainability Assessment tool.
Baseline Sustainability Assessment Tool
Suitable for any size of business, this multiple-choice approach leads to a score reflecting how well the organisation is doing on core sustainability issues - with recommendations for future action.
Net Zero Assessment Tool
This uses multiple-choice questions to score the organization’s commitment to, and progress toward, science-based net-zero targets, and suggests over three dozen actions that would reduce Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions.

3. Materiality

We help establish your sustainability priorities

What are the most important sustainability issues inside your business? Where are your biggest external impacts, positive or negative?
Double Materiality Assessment
We assess the key areas of impact and future focus.
Stakeholder Power-Interest Matrix
We review your key stakeholders and audit your stakeholder engagement approach

4. Means

Operationalising sustainability - the methodology

We help you implement a management system approach to operationalise your sustainability strategy
B Corp Impact Framework
We guide you through the B Corp framework as an integrated management tool - and can help you achieve B Corp accreditation.
ISO standards hierarchy
We draw on frameworks such as ISO26000 and BSI8950 and others to bring sustainability and social value to life within your organisation so it becomes second nature and you become a more resilient business.

5. Management

Doing the right things - and doing things right!

Sustainability is the responsibility of everyone in the organisation, but management from the top down must be committed and walk the talk for real culture change and positive impact.
Governance audit & leadership review
Our philosophy is simple — hire a team of diverse, passionate people and foster a culture that empowers you to do your best work.
Forcefield analysis
Our philosophy is simple — hire a team of diverse, passionate people and foster a culture that empowers you to do your best work.

6. Metrics

If you can measure it you can manage it!

We identify the key metrics and KPIs for your organisation to be able to measure and report on not only your inputs but your outputs, outcomes and impacts.

And monetise in £££ to see your social ROI and bottom line impact.

SIM Framework

We work with the University of Northampton Institute for Social Innovation & Impact's  Social Impact Matrix © Theory of Change methodology to assess your impacts against established benchmarks

UN SDGs

We can report against the United Nations 17 individual Sustainable Development Goals, as the globally recognsied umbrella framework for sustainability. And monetise the impacts as well.

7. Monitoring - and reporting

Bask in the halo effect!

Having done all the good work, tell the world! We can make sure that you are able to monitor and report on progress to all your stakeholders, to build transparency and trust, with evidence-based numbers that can guide future decisions and investments in sustainability and ESG.

The reporting frameworks we recommend depend on the nature and needs of the stakeholders. We help you keep up-to-date with fast-moving changes in this area and align with as many generic and industry standards and benchmarks as possible.

GRI

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a framework for reporting to multiple stakeholders.

SASB

SASB is useful for disclosing relevant sustainability information to investors, identifying the sustainability-related risks and opportunities most likely to affect an entity’s cash flows, access to finance and cost of capital .
